GNUUC ANNUAL IN-GATHERING SERVICE
PROFESSOR A-J LEVINE

Plan to join us for this “official” start of the fall congregation program. We gather at the end of summer to celebrate our life together and welcome momentums, rocks, water, etc. from your travels or time in the city to share together and place on the center worship table. We look forward to another active and busy year and look forward to our worship, fellowship, religious education for all ages, shared work for justice, and the myriad ways we care for one another. And it’s great to start the season with our Guest Speaker – AJ Levine. BE WITH US BECAUSE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE PART OF OUR CELEBRATION!!!

Amy-Jill Levine is E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Graduate Department of Religion, and Program in Jewish Studies. A self-described “Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt,” Professor Levine combines historical- critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies.

Service Coordinator: Thena Berry
Greeters: Marion Bogen, Bob Niemi, Denise O’Briant
Food Table Volunteers: Lenore & David Vanderkooi

Mark your calendars and please begin collecting your donations for the annual church yard sale to be held on Saturday, October 23. We don’t have a great deal of storage room, so it will be best if you can hold onto them until closer to the date. Mike Morgan will come pick up things from your house if you ask him. In this year of tight budget, fundraisers like this take on an especial importance for the church, so please plan on participating!

Families and friends, join us on Friday, September 10, for our annual excursion to Shakespeare in the Park. This year’s production is Love’s Labor’s Lost with one of our own youth playing the part of Dumain, one of the Prince’s friends who swears off women and other pleasures and quickly breaks his vow. There is a sword fight and dancing as well as the usual wordplay.

Meet between 6:00 and 6:15 at the Centennial Park Bandshell. We usually set up blankets and then walk to Calypso to pick up dinner. You are also welcome to bring a picnic dinner or to choose from onsite street vendors. Pre-show entertainment begins at 6:30, the show starts at 7:30 and usually ends by 9:30.

High school youth can attend without parents if the parents sign the permission slip provided by Kristin Reveal. Younger children require parent supervision. All ages welcome!

Bring large blankets, water bottles, and money for dinner/snacks. A $5 donation is also suggested to support Shakespeare in the Park. T-shirts are also for sale. Contact Kristin Reveal with questions.

Please join us for a Wednesday night Adult Religious Education presentation on Wednesday, September 15, beginning at 7:00pm when Michael Rose will discuss his book Audible Signs: Essays from a Musical Ground with us. Whether it’s a song by Brahms or by the Boss, a serenade by Mozart or a ballet by John Harbison, music radiates a diverse spectrum of meaningful signs, hidden in plain hearing. To enjoy the interplay of musical signs, it helps to recognize them in the first place. The various iconographic strategies of “Audible Signs”—including commentary on graphic works, books, poems, and film—yield new appreciations and critiques of composers of vastly divergent styles and technical materials. Mr. Rose, Associate Professor of Composition at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, composes a variety of chamber and symphonic music for many distinguished performers and venues.
