The congregation, youth and children will be caroling at the Bordeaux Nursing Home on Sunday, December 13 at 1:30pm. We will be making cards for the residents during Religious Education classes on December 6.
Hanging of the Greens will be a fun-filled intergenerational activity directly following lunch Sunday, November 29. We will decorate the holiday tree in the sanctuary and trim the windows. Children are most welcome!! Refreshments will be provided!!
If you have not done so yet, please bring a family ornament to donate to the GNUUC tree! There is a “memory book” where you can record your donation and its significance! Individuals and families are encouraged to tell of their ornament during the Joys and Concerns portion of worship service any Sunday between now and Christmas.
Registration has begun for the Children’s Religious Education classes, which start on September 13. This year we will be concentrating on our Jewish-Christian Roots and World Religions. A description of this year’s curriculum for all ages is printed in the 2009-10 Children’s Religious Education Program flyer.
As part of this summer’s RE Curriculum Celebrating Rainforests, the Religious Education class will be accepting donations of gently used toys and books, for the next three Sundays, August 9, 16 and 23, to raise funds to sponsor three rain forest animals through the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). Their goal is to raise $150 to sponsor conservations efforts to protect three rain forest animals.
They chose one animal from each of the continents with a tropical rain forest. The selected animals are: a Black Jaguar from the South American rain forest, a Gorilla from the central African rain forest, and a Clouded Leopard from the Indonesian rain forest. For a donation of $50 per animal, the WWF will send funds to conservation efforts for these animals and send the children a photograph and plush toy of each animal.
Bring donations to the religious education building before each service. Children will be there to accept them and say THANKS!
The older kids in the GNUUC RE program will be conducting a research survey of coffee consumption and coffee preferences during the lunch hour of August 9th. They will be asking people in the fellowship hall about their coffee behavior during the GNUUC lunch hour. Questions will include, “How many cups of coffee have you had at GNUUC in the last 30 days?” “How often do you drink coffee outside of GNUUC?” “On a scale of 1 to 5, how would you rate the GNUUC coffee?” “What kind of coffee do you drink at home?”
This summer, the RE classes have been studying the rain forest and our relationship to it as part of the 7th UU principle: “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” They learned that coffee is a rain forest crop and that different coffee growing practices have different effects on the rain forest and the people who grow coffee for a living.
The kids plan to use their research data to understand our congregation’s impact on rain forests through its coffee consumption. With this information, they plan to make a recommendation regarding coffee use at GNUUC.
On Sunday, July 12, we will begin our 10-week multi-aged program – Celebrating Rainforests- and we’re excited about it. We’ve chosen this theme as a way to demonstrate our commitment to the Unitarian Universalist seventh Principle:
We affirm and promote our respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. (We believe in caring for our planet Earth, home we share with all living things.)
We have many interesting and fun activities planned. We’ll have stories and discussions, special music and movement, art and construction activities, and a major social action project. We’ll be creating our own rainforest. We’ll have a rainforest treasure hunt, a recycled toys and books sale, a tasting party and more. Our special project will be raising money to help preserve rainforest land and/or assist people living in a rainforest, a choice to be made by the children.
We hope that you will be able to join us each Sunday, starting July 12 and through September 6. We realize that many families have vacations scheduled…try to make it if you are in Nashville…it will be more fun for you and others if you are there for as many Sundays as you can be! We will not only have many projects and activities, but we will be putting together a special celebration.
On some Sundays, there will be something special to bring and/or remember which will be connected to an activity for that day. You’ll receive fliers in class AND VIA EMAIL, so look for them. For example, one Sunday we will be making Rainforest T-shirts and the children will need to bring a white, plain T-shirt.
We think this will be a meaningful and fun program and we encourage you to help your children be a part of it.
So come celebrate with us!

We are trying something different this year! Children’s Religious Education would like to invite the parents and youth to come to a “Town Hall Meeting” to discuss Fall Programming options. Join us next Sunday, August 17, from 12:30 – 1:00 in the Sanctuary for a Fall Programming and Calendar preview and an opportunity to provide us feedback on designing a program that engages both the parents and youth.
Volunteer Teachers Still Needed
We still have Volunteer Openings and need GNUUC congregants to help out! We have co-teaching positions open for K-1st grade, 2nd – 4th grade, Middle School, and High School. Volunteers only teach twice a month! Contact Kristin Reveal (400-3445 or kristinhreveal@comcast.net) with questions or to discuss volunteer opportunities.

In the spirit of our Mission Statement, Children’s RE is starting a youth hand bell choir this fall. Thena Berry, with the help of Mary Hinton, is going to lead the youth in lessons that introduce the hand bells, music, and simple songs. “Introduction to Hand Bells” will be on the following Sundays this Fall: Sep 30, Nov 4, Dec 2. In November, we will form a Youth Hand Bell Choir for youth in 5th to 12th grade. The Youth Hand Bell Choir will practice after the service and perform at the Christmas Eve service in December. They will also peform in the March 30 service in the Spring.
